Immigration Legal Services in Belarus

Belarus is home to a growing community of foreign nationals — IT professionals working at HTP resident companies, expatriate managers at international businesses, spouses of Belarusian citizens, investors, and people with family or ancestral connections to the country. Navigating Belarusian immigration law from outside the country — or for the first time — is straightforward in some respects and surprisingly technical in others.

The procedures are defined and predictable. But the details matter: the wrong entry visa makes a residence permit application impossible, a missing apostille on a single document resets the timeline, and an expired permit creates a legal problem that takes time to resolve. Getting the process right from the start — with the right legal support — avoids these problems entirely.

AMBY Legal advises and represents foreign nationals and international businesses on the full range of Belarusian immigration matters. We work in English and Russian, handle cases remotely by power of attorney where possible, and keep clients informed at every stage.

FAQ

What is the difference between a temporary and permanent residence permit in Belarus?

A temporary residence permit is issued for a defined period — typically one to two years — and must be renewed. It is tied to a specific ground such as employment, family connection or property ownership. A permanent residence permit is open-ended, is not tied to a specific ground, and gives rights close to those of Belarusian citizens including the right to work without a separate work permit and access to state healthcare and education on equal terms with citizens.

Can I apply for a Belarus residence permit without visiting the country?

The application itself must be submitted in person at the Citizenship and Migration Department. However, the document preparation process — obtaining apostilles, organising translations, preparing the application package — can be handled remotely. We prepare clients fully before their visit so that the process is as efficient as possible.

How long does it take to get a temporary residence permit in Belarus?

The standard processing period is 15 calendar days from submission of a complete application. Applications based on marriage to a Belarusian citizen take 30 days. Document preparation — obtaining apostilles, criminal record certificates and notarised translations — typically takes several weeks and should be planned well in advance.

Does Belarus allow dual citizenship?

Belarus does not generally recognise dual citizenship — Belarusian law requires applicants for citizenship to renounce their previous citizenship. There are limited exceptions. We advise on the specific implications for each client’s situation during the initial consultation.

Can an employer sponsor a foreign national’s residence permit?

Yes — employment with a Belarusian employer is one of the main grounds for a temporary residence permit. For most employers, a special work permit is required before the residence permit application can proceed. The exception is employment at HTP resident companies, where the work permit requirement is waived.
