Single Status Certificate in Belarus
A single status certificate – справка о семейном положении or справка о том, что лицо не состоит в браке – is an official document confirming that a named person is not currently married under Belarusian law. It is required in a wide range of situations where a person needs to prove their marital status to a foreign authority – most commonly when registering a marriage abroad or applying for a visa or residence permit.
The document is issued by the civil registry office – ZAGS – at the person’s place of registration in Belarus, or in some cases by local executive committees. It confirms that no marriage record exists in the Belarusian civil registry for the named person – or that a previous marriage has been legally dissolved.
For Belarusian citizens living abroad, obtaining this certificate without travelling to Belarus requires a power of attorney to a representative in Belarus. We manage the full process remotely.
When a Single Status Certificate Is Required
Marriage registration abroad: The most common reason. Most countries require both parties to a marriage to produce documentary evidence that they are free to marry – that they have no existing marriage that would make the new marriage invalid. For Belarusian citizens marrying abroad – in Israel, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, the United States, the United Kingdom and many other countries – the local registry office or religious authority will typically require a Belarusian single status certificate.
Visa and residence permit applications: Some immigration authorities require proof of single status as part of the documentation package – particularly for family reunification applications where the marital status of the applicant is relevant.
Citizenship applications: Citizenship applications in some countries require documentary proof of marital status from all previous countries of residence.
Notarial procedures: Some notarial procedures – particularly those involving property or inheritance – require proof of marital status to establish the rights of the parties.

What the Certificate Shows
The Belarusian single status certificate confirms that the named person is not currently registered as married in the Belarusian civil registry. It is based on the records held by the ZAGS at the place of the person’s registration.
Important limitation: The certificate reflects the records of the issuing ZAGS office. If a person was married in a different region of Belarus from where they are currently registered, the issuing office may not have a complete picture. In such cases, we obtain the certificate from the ZAGS office with access to the most complete records for the specific person.
The certificate does not confirm: that the person was never married – only that they are not currently married; marriages contracted abroad that have not been registered in Belarus; informal unions or cohabitation arrangements.

Israel – Specific Requirements
Israel is one of the most common destinations for Belarusian citizens seeking a single status certificate – both for marriage registration and for the aliyah – immigration – process. Israeli authorities have specific requirements for Belarusian documents. Since 2025, the Israeli authorities introduced new requirements for documents submitted by repatriates – including specific apostille procedures. We are familiar with the current Israeli requirements and advise clients on what is needed for their specific situation.

FAQ
A single status certificate is an official Belarusian document confirming that the named person is not currently registered as married in the Belarusian civil registry. It is used to prove freedom to marry abroad and for various immigration and official procedures that require proof of marital status.
Yes – by issuing a power of attorney to a representative in Belarus. We act as that representative – obtaining the certificate from the relevant ZAGS office and delivering it with apostille and translation if required.
Belarusian law does not impose a fixed validity period on single status certificates. However, most foreign authorities require the certificate to have been issued within three to six months of submission. We advise on the specific requirements of the authority you are submitting to.
If the certificate is being submitted to an authority outside the CIS – in an EU country, Israel, the United States, the United Kingdom or elsewhere – an apostille is required. For use in Russia, Kazakhstan, Ukraine and other CIS countries, no apostille is needed under the Minsk Convention.
If you were previously married in Belarus and your divorce was registered in the Belarusian civil registry, the single status certificate will confirm that you are not currently married. If your divorce was registered abroad and has not been recognised in Belarus, this may create a complication. We advise on this situation.
